Situated along the Fraser River in the northern part of the Township of Langley, Fort Langley offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation in close proximity to all the comforts of a thriving town centre. With a population of less than 4,000 people, it’s a small town with charm to spare. Here are five excellent reasons to live there.

The original Fort Langley was established in 1827 in what is now Derby Reach Regional Park. The fort that remains today was built in 1840 and became a National Historic Site in 1923. The new and old fort sites are connected by the popular Fort-to-Fort hiking and cycling trail.

Many heritage buildings remain in the core of Fort Langley, including the community hall, the heritage CN rail station and, of course, the fort itself.

Fort Langley is located on the south bank of the Fraser River, along the Bedford Channel, offering prime opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, dragonboating and fishing. The Langley Rowing and Paddling Centre, a collaboration between ParkLane Homes, the Township of Langley and local paddling groups, offers the longest open dock frontage in the province, and has hosted the Western Canadian and Canadian University Rowing Championships and the BC Summer Games.

Those who prefer to look at the river from shore can do so from the patio of a restaurant or bar perched riverside, or even from their own home in the master-planned waterfront community of Bedford Landing.

The central area of Fort Langley has an old-fashioned Main Street feel, with shops and restaurants clustered along the central Glover Road. Homes in the core area have Walk Scores in the high seventies, meaning many errands can be done on foot – so city commuters can park the car for the weekend. With plenty of charming shops, galleries featuring the work of local artists and even its own winery, Fort Langley is a stroll-to-shop kind of town free of strip malls and big-box stores.

There are other festivals in Fort Langley, including Brigade Days and the French Canadian Winter Festival, but he Cranberry Festival is the marquee event. Held every year on the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend, the festival brings about 60,000 people to Fort Langley to celebrate the cranberry harvest and the history of cranberry use in the community, dating back to the First Nations people. With events at the Fort and throughout the village, you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about cranberries and find every kind of cranberry product imaginable. After a day of family-friendly activities, adults can pop by the Fort Wine Company for one last cranberry treat – a bottle of Mighty Fraser cranberry wine.

Waterfront condo? Check. Estate-sized lot with six-bedroom home? Check. Room for horses? Check. You get the idea. Fort Langley offers a wide variety of real estate options, from 700-square-foot condos to palatial grand homes (as of this writing, there were three homes for sale with 6+ bedrooms and more than 6,000 square feet). Whether you want to spend $300,000 or $3 million, there is a property in Fort Langley for you.
