🦋 Krause Berry Hosts 10th Annual Butterfly Release Fundraiser for Langley Hospice 💜

Andy Schildhorn • August 16, 2024

The 10th annual butterfly release fundraiser for Langley Hospice Society and Langley Lodge takes place at Krause Berry Farms again on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Hundreds come out for the event to release up to 400 painted lady butterflies in memory, honour, and celebration of a lost loved one at the local farm.

This will be the third year Cameron McKay, volunteer coordinator at Langley hospice, has helped organize the event.

“The butterfly gives people a chance to stop and just share a moment in honour of a loved one, and we think the butterfly is a beautiful way of doing that just for what is represents and symbolizes,” McKay said.

It's open to the public, with the butterfly release happening promptly at 1:30 p.m., noted Shannon Todd Booth, executive director.

“There are many ways to remember loved one, like planting flower or saplings, and the butterfly release is one of them,” said Todd Booth, noting ritual and traditions are a common method used to aid in processing a loss and work through the grief.

Those interested in participating must pre-order a butterfly, although the general public can attend and watch without charge.

In addition to the actual release of butterflies on Saturday, event organizers have also arranged kids activities onsite such as live entertainment, crafts and activities, and facepainting.

Todd Booth offered a suggestion for attendees wishing to attract butterflies on the day of the release.

“We recommend visitors to wear bright colours, which attract butterflies to sit around them.”

These butterflies are $25 each and can be pre-ordered online at langleyhospice.ca or by phone at 604-530-1115. Only a few butterflies will be available onsite on event day, beginning at 11 a.m. – on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Not everyone has a special reason to release the butterfly, said Todd Booth. Some simply attend to support the organizations or share in “the emotion and togetherness of the butterfly release event.”

Krause Berry Farms is located at 6179 248 St. The event runs from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Brandy is a 2-year-old German Shepherd mix with a serious love for belly rubs, fetch, and being your constant shadow. She’s sweet, affectionate, and always ready to flop over for tummy time! This big, bouncy girl handles beautifully and is incredibly people-oriented—so much so that being left alone makes her sad. She will not hesitate to vocalize when she feels lonely or may try to find an escape route to get to her people. Because of this, she’d thrive in a home where someone is around most of the time to shower her with attention and keep her company. Brandy is easily excitable and can be jumpy when making new friends with people, so she’s best suited to a home without kids. She knows “sit” and “drop it,” has a cute little auto-sit when she wants something, and will gently place her toys at your feet for fetch (which she LOVES and doesn’t destroy—bonus!). Brandy also insists on being the one and only furry royalty in your life. She doesn’t want to share her humans, her home, or her toys—so no other pets, please! She’s ready to rule her kingdom solo as the Queen Bee she knows she is. If you’ve got a secure yard, a good throwing arm, and room in your heart for a one-dog show, Brandy just might be your perfect match. Check out LAPS here for more adoptables .

Langley's growth may slow down as a result of changing immigration rules, but it is still expected to have more than 280,000 residents by 2051, according to recent Metro Vancouver growth estimates. The report, by the Metro Vancouver Regional District's regional planning committee, was released earlier this month and has three growth scenarios – low, medium, and high. As of 2024, Metro Vancouver estimated Langley City had 35,316 residents, and the Township had 162,926, for a total of 198,242. 👉 More Details Here
